10 Thinking Points when reviewing Michigan Nursing Homes

Nursing homes are state-licensed facilities that provide custodial and limited care for its residents 24/7. Typically, a staff will include health aides, nurses, social workers, maintenance staff, activities specialists and those who prepare the meals.

Signs that a person may be ready for nursing facility care Most often, it will not be the decision of the patient. It is usually the caregiver that decides it is time. Patients who are spending sleepless nights, agitated, have dementia and are incontinent need special assistance. It at this point that more in depth around-the-clock care is needed.

What to Look for

Facility Size What is the ratio of staff to residents? A smaller staff may offer better quality care while a larger staff may offer a greater variety of activities.

Location How far away is the facility from family and friends? Will the home be so far away that the loved one will feel isolated?

Room Selection Will you need a private room? If sharing a room, how does the staff determine the compatibility of roommates?

Choosing a Nursing Home

Bed-Hold If a resident needs to leave the facility for a stay in the hospital, how long will the resident’s room be held? At what point would the resident lose that specific room?

Valuables How will the resident's valuables be protected?

Complaints What procedure is in place to hear grievances and how are they resolved?

Activities Request a calendar of activities. See what the home is doing to occasionally entertain the patients. Are they just left of stare at the television? Talk to some of the residents.

Morale Watch and listen. How are visitors greeted? How does the staff interact with the residents? Is the overall mood of the facility positive, cheerful, sunny?

Quality of Food and Menu Have the prospective resident eat a meal at the facility. This will give you an idea of whether or not your loved one will be pleased with the taste of the food and the dining atmosphere.

Visiting Hours If there are too many restrictions, it may be difficult for working friends and relatives to drop in for a visit.

Choose Carefully This decision will probably be for a several year stay. Moving a loved one into a home is usually an emotional and stressful event. So it is important that there is not a hasty decision. You do not want to have to move your loved one around to several different facilities.
