Medicare Part B 2012

Video: What is Medicare Part B?

What Does Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) Cover?

Part B Preventive Services

Medicare Part B covers many preventive services.
You pay nothing for most preventive services if you get the services from a doctor or other health care provider who accepts assignment.

However, for some preventive services, you may have to pay a deductible, coinsurance, or both.

Click on the apple and take a look at the list of common preventive services and general descriptions covered by Part B.

You will also see the preventive services checklist to ask your doctor or other health care provider which preventive services you should get.

Part B Medical

Medicare Part B helps cover medically-necessary services like doctors’ services, outpatient care, home health services, durable medical equipment, and other medical services.

You'll find more information in the CMS Medigap Guide page 31

Part B What You Pay

If you do not have a Medicare Supplement Plan you will be responsible for the following deductibles and/or coinsurance.

Annual Deductible

In 2012, you will pay the first $140. Then Medicare will start to pay its share.

Coinsurance

Generally, Medicare will pay 80% of Medicare approved expenses and you will be responsible for 20% of the bill.

Blood

Medicare covers all but three pints of blood.

Excess benefits

You are responsible for paying 100% of the cost of what Medicare considers excess benefits. These may be expenses that a doctor charges that are beyond what is covered by Medicare.

Traveling outside the US

Medicare pays nothing for emergency care received outside the US. You are responsible for 100% of the costs.

The importance of Medicare Supplement Insurance

When you add up the costs of what you are responsible for paying for Medicare Part A and Part B, it's easy to see the value of a Medicare Supplement Plan. You will find some plans cover 100% of what you would have had to pay and the premiums can be very affordable.
